Two main capabilities of AI are:
  1. AI Chatbot: A context-aware assistant that can access your Upshift data and help you with queries
  2. AI Agents in Workflows: Intelligent automation that can process data, make decisions, and execute tasks within your workflows
AI agents operate under the permission system. You can assign specific roles to AI agents under Settings → Members → Roles, giving you full control over what data they can access and what actions they can perform.
AI actions consume workflow credits based on the complexity of the task and the AI model used.
On cloud, the models run on Upshift’s own provider accounts: you choose which ones your workspace uses under Settings → AI, and there is no way to plug in your own API key.On a self-hosted instance, the built-in providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, xAI) work on every plan, Free included. Set the matching API key (OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, GOOGLE_API_KEY, MISTRAL_API_KEY, XAI_API_KEY) in Settings → Admin Panel → Configuration Variables, or in your .env followed by a server restart. The models then appear under Settings → Admin Panel → AI.Custom providers (custom endpoints, private gateways, OpenAI-compatible or local models, extra regions), added under Settings → Admin Panel → AI → Custom Providers, are currently complimentary up to 25 seats. Above that, an Organization plan is required. The AI section of the admin panel states where your instance stands.
By default, the Roles list is filtered to roles assignable to workspace members. If a role is assignable only to AI agents, you need to change the filter to include AI-agent roles.
